Sports Synthetic Turf Maintenance: What Clubs and Ground Managers Need to Know

Artificial does not mean maintenance-free

One of the common misunderstandings among clubs and facility managers first adopting synthetic turf is that the surface requires little or no ongoing attention. This is true in comparison to natural grass — the mowing, irrigation, and fertilising schedule is gone — but synthetic turf has its own maintenance requirements that, if neglected, will lead to performance degradation and a shortened product lifespan.

Understanding what maintenance involves, how frequently it needs to be carried out, and what warning signs to look for allows clubs and ground managers to protect their investment over the long term.

Regular maintenance tasks

Grooming and brushing

Sports synthetic turf needs to be brushed and groomed regularly to keep the pile upright and the infill evenly distributed. High-traffic areas — centre circles, try lines, corners — see more compaction than less-used parts of the field. Regular mechanical grooming redistributes infill and lifts the pile, maintaining consistent performance across the surface.

Frequency depends on use intensity, but for facilities with regular weekly bookings, grooming at least fortnightly is generally appropriate.

Infill management

The infill — typically sand, crumb rubber, or a hybrid material — settles over time with use. Uneven infill distribution affects ball performance, player traction, and shock absorption. Periodic infill top-ups are needed to maintain the correct level, particularly in heavily used areas.

Infill levels should be checked as part of routine inspections. A surface that has lost significant infill depth in key areas needs attention before continued heavy use.

Debris removal

Leaves, dirt, and organic debris should be cleared from the surface regularly. Organic material left on the surface can break down and contribute to moss and algae growth in humid conditions — a problem that is much easier to prevent than to address after the fact. Blowers and rakes are both used depending on the type of debris.

Seasonal and periodic maintenance

Deep cleaning

Periodic deep cleaning — typically once or twice per year depending on use — involves a more thorough treatment of the surface to remove embedded organic material, address any moss or algae growth, and restore the surface to a cleaner baseline state. Specialist cleaning equipment and solutions designed for synthetic turf are used.

Seam and edge inspections

Seams and edges are the most vulnerable points of any synthetic turf installation. Regular inspection for lifting, separation, or damage allows problems to be addressed before they worsen. A lifting seam in a heavily used area can become a trip hazard quickly.

Documentation and certification

For facilities that hold competition certification from governing bodies, maintaining records of maintenance activities supports the recertification process. Some certifying bodies require evidence of regular maintenance as part of ongoing approval. Keeping a maintenance log — what was done, when, by whom — is straightforward but valuable.

In-house vs contracted maintenance

Routine tasks like litter removal, basic brushing, and infill checks can often be handled in-house with appropriate equipment. Deeper grooming, infill top-ups, and professional cleaning typically benefit from specialist equipment and experience. Many facilities use a combination: in-house for routine work and contracted specialists for periodic deeper maintenance.

When the surface is first installed, asking the supplier about recommended maintenance schedules and approved contractors for your region sets you up well for the ongoing management of the surface.
