Online Medical Certificates in New Zealand: Are They Legally Valid?

This is one of the most common questions people have before using a telehealth service for the first time: if I get a certificate from an online doctor, will my employer or institution actually accept it?

The answer is yes — provided the certificate is issued by a registered practitioner following a genuine clinical assessment.

What Makes a Medical Certificate Valid in New Zealand

Under the Holidays Act 2003 and associated employment law, a valid medical certificate must be issued by a registered health practitioner. This includes doctors registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand, as well as certain nurse practitioners and other regulated health professionals.

There is no legal requirement that the consultation take place in person. The law does not specify the mode of consultation — only that a registered practitioner assessed the patient and formed a professional view about their fitness for work or study.

How Telehealth Certificates Meet That Standard

Online medical certificates issued via reputable New Zealand telehealth platforms are issued by registered NZ doctors following a clinical assessment. They carry the doctor's name, registration details, and a statement of unfitness for work or study — the same information contained in a certificate issued after an in-person consultation.

The certificate does not indicate how the consultation was conducted. From a legal and employment law perspective, it is equivalent.

Can an Employer Refuse to Accept It?

Employers are required to accept a medical certificate from any registered health practitioner. They cannot require that it come from a specific doctor or clinic, and they cannot insist on an in-person assessment unless their employment agreement specifically provides for this in a lawful way.

If an employer refuses to accept a certificate from an online doctor on the basis that it was issued following a telehealth consultation, this would not align with current New Zealand employment law. Employment New Zealand provides guidance if disputes arise.

What About Educational Institutions?

Most New Zealand universities, polytechnics, and schools accept medical certificates from registered practitioners without specifying that an in-person examination must have occurred. That said, requirements vary by institution, and some may have their own forms or processes for applying for extensions or aegrotat passes.

If you are unsure, check with your institution before booking your consultation to confirm what they require.

Choosing a Reputable Platform

The validity of a certificate depends on it being issued by a registered practitioner following a real assessment. When choosing a telehealth service, confirm that doctors are registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Reputable platforms make this easy to verify.

A legitimate online consultation carries the same professional and legal weight as any other medical assessment. The location of the appointment does not change the credentials of the doctor who conducted it.
