The Difference Between a Good Headstone and a Great One

Most headstones fulfil the basic function of marking a grave with a name and dates. A smaller number of them do something more — they carry a genuine sense of the person they commemorate, and they continue to mean something to family members who visit years or decades later. The gap between adequate and memorable is not always about money. It is usually about the care applied at each stage of the process.

It Starts With the Stone

Premium granite is harder, more consistent in colour, and holds a polished finish longer than lower-grade stone. For something intended to last for generations, the base material matters more than many families initially realise. When comparing suppliers of headstones, ask specifically about the grade and origin of the stone rather than accepting "granite" as a sufficient answer.

The Inscription Matters More Than the Decoration

Elaborate borders and decorative flourishes can be attractive, but they date. An inscription that says something true about a person never does. The best memorials are often relatively simple in their visual design — a good stone, crisp lettering, and words that were chosen with real thought.

Take time with the wording. Talk with family members. Consider whether the phrase you are settling on is one you will still feel was right in twenty years.

Engraving Quality Is Visible

Look closely at example work from any supplier you consider. High-quality sandblasted or laser engraving should be crisp, evenly spaced, and free from chipping at the edges of letters. If a supplier is reluctant to show you completed examples up close, that tells you something.

Deep sandblasting cuts further into the stone surface than standard laser engraving and holds up better over time in New Zealand's coastal and high-rainfall environments. It is worth the additional cost for families prioritising longevity.

Design Coherence

A great headstone works as a whole — the stone colour, the shape, the lettering style, and any decorative elements all relate to each other. When individual elements are added without that coherence, the result can feel busy. A skilled designer will advise on how choices work together and be honest if something does not fit the overall composition.

The Supplier Relationship

The quality of the finished memorial is inseparable from the quality of the supplier. Look for a business that communicates clearly, provides a proof before anything is cut, manages cemetery consent, and stands behind its work if something goes wrong. The relationship runs for several months from consultation to installation — choose someone you trust.
