The Real Cost of Artificial Grass: Installation, Maintenance, and Long-Term Value

Getting past the sticker shock

When people first look into replacing their lawn, the upfront cost of artificial grass can catch them off guard. It is higher than a roll of turf or a bag of seed, and that alone causes some homeowners to pause.

But cost comparisons that stop at the purchase price miss most of the picture. The real question is what the surface costs over five, ten, or fifteen years — and when you work through those numbers, the economics of artificial grass tend to look considerably better than the upfront figure suggests.

Breaking down the installation cost

Artificial grass installation in Australia generally falls between $30 and $80 per square metre, all in. The variation is driven by several factors:

Product quality

Entry-level products sit at the lower end of the price range. Mid-range and premium products cost more but offer better durability, a more realistic appearance, and longer warranties. Buying cheap turf for a high-traffic area is a false economy.

Site preparation

This is often where quotes vary most. Removing an existing lawn, excavating, compacting a base layer, and installing drainage can add meaningfully to the overall cost — but skimping here is a common cause of problems down the track. Poor preparation leads to uneven surfaces and drainage issues.

Area size and shape

Larger, straightforward rectangular areas are cheaper per square metre to install than smaller, irregular spaces with curves, obstacles, and detailed edging requirements.

What you stop spending money on

The ongoing savings from artificial grass are easy to underestimate. Consider what most Australian homeowners spend maintaining a natural lawn each year: water, fertiliser, herbicides, mowing (whether a ride-on, a petrol mower, or a regular tradie service), aerating, and periodic re-turfing of worn sections. These costs accumulate.

In water-restricted regions — and most of urban Australia has faced some form of water restrictions in recent years — reducing irrigation use can also have a direct impact on household water bills. For larger properties, that saving becomes more significant.

The lifespan question

A well-manufactured and properly installed artificial grass product will typically last between 15 and 25 years under normal residential use. The main factors affecting longevity are UV resistance, drainage performance, and the volume and type of foot traffic the surface receives.

Warranty as a quality signal

Reputable suppliers back their products with warranties that cover UV fading, fibre integrity, and backing performance. A short or vague warranty is usually a signal about product quality. When evaluating quotes, it is worth asking specifically what the warranty covers and for how long.

Where homeowners get caught out

The two most common cost mistakes in artificial grass projects are buying on price alone and underinvesting in installation.

A cheaper product installed on a well-prepared base will outperform an expensive product laid on a poorly prepared surface. And a product selected purely on cost — without considering pile weight, drainage, or UV rating — may look fine on day one but show wear and fading well before its expected lifespan.

Running costs once installed

Day-to-day maintenance for artificial grass is minimal. Occasional brushing with a stiff broom keeps the pile upright. Debris from trees and garden beds needs to be cleared. If you have pets, a rinse-down is sometimes needed. None of this requires products, machinery, or specialist services.

For most households, the practical maintenance demand is a fraction of what a natural lawn requires — and there is no seasonal surge in effort during spring and summer growth periods.

How to think about the return on investment

The break-even point for artificial grass compared to natural lawn maintenance varies by household, but for most Australian properties, it falls somewhere between three and eight years. After that point, the cost advantage of artificial grass compounds.

For homeowners planning to stay in their property long term, the maths usually work in favour of the switch. For those with rental properties or investment homes, the reduced maintenance burden has its own practical and financial value beyond the numbers.
