The Busy Person's Case for Ready Made Meal Delivery (And How to Make It Work)

If you are genuinely busy — not performatively busy, but actually stretched — the idea of spending an hour on dinner most nights is not realistic. The question is not whether to find a shortcut, but which shortcut is actually worth using.

Ready made meal delivery is one of the more sensible options available, but only if you go about it properly. Here is the honest case for it, and how to make it work practically.

What busy people actually need from food

When time is short, the things that matter most about food are reliability, speed, and not having to think too hard. Ready made meal delivery, done well, removes all three friction points. You make the decisions once when you order, the food arrives and goes in the freezer, and on any given night you pull out a tray and put it in the oven. The thinking is already done. The shopping is already done. Dinner is forty minutes away with almost no active involvement.

That is genuinely useful for busy people in a way that meal kits, for example, often are not. Meal kits require ingredient management, active cooking time, and a reasonable level of kitchen engagement. They are good for people who want to cook with some structure — they are not the right solution for people who want dinner without active effort.

The common objections, addressed honestly

It costs more than cooking from scratch — yes, per serving, ready made meals cost more than the raw ingredients of an equivalent home-cooked meal. But the relevant comparison for a genuinely busy person is not home cooking from scratch — it is what they are actually doing on the nights when cooking does not happen. Takeaways, delivery apps, cafes, or supermarket grab-and-go are all more expensive than quality frozen meals per serving.

I am not sure about the quality — the quality range in the ready made meal market is wide. The low end is genuinely not worth buying. The high end — small-batch cooked, snap-frozen, real ingredients — is a different product entirely.

I worry it is not healthy enough — a well-made frozen meal with real proteins, vegetables, and a sauce made from actual ingredients is nutritionally comparable to the equivalent home-cooked meal.

How to actually make it work

Order on a schedule rather than reactively. Setting a regular fortnightly order and treating it like a grocery shop removes the ongoing decision-making overhead.

Build a rotation of known favourites. Variety is good, but trying every new option every order creates evaluation overhead. Identify three or four meals the household reliably enjoys and keep those stocked.

Do not try to replace all meals. Ready made meal delivery works best as a component of the week's eating, not the entirety of it. Most busy households find a natural rhythm: cook two or three nights when there is capacity, use frozen meals on the other nights.

The time maths

An average weeknight cook-from-scratch meal takes 45–60 minutes of active time including prep, cooking, and cleaning up. A ready made meal takes about five minutes of active involvement — putting the tray in the oven, setting a timer, and serving. Across three nights per week, that is a meaningful difference — potentially two or more hours of active time returned to the week.

For busy people across New Zealand, ready made meal delivery from a Whangārei kitchen covers all of the practical requirements — nationwide overnight delivery, insulated packaging, a menu wide enough to sustain a regular rotation, and portion options from single to family.
