Five Things to Look for When You Visit a Headstone Showroom

Visiting a showroom before placing an order is one of the best decisions a family can make. Photographs and websites can only tell you so much. Standing in front of completed memorials — running your hand across the stone, looking closely at how the letters are cut — gives you a far more reliable sense of what you are buying.

Here is what to pay attention to when you walk through the door.

1. Stone Consistency

Look at the surface of polished granite examples on display. The colour should be consistent across the face without patches, clouds, or obvious veining that interrupts the look. Hold a business card up to the surface — a high-quality polish will reflect it clearly. Inconsistency in the stone itself is not always avoidable with natural granite, but a supplier who selects carefully will show you their best work, not their average.

2. Engraving Sharpness

Look closely at inscriptions on completed examples. The edges of each letter should be clean and crisp, with no chipping, fraying, or uneven depth. Sandblasted lettering should have a consistent texture throughout. Laser-engraved text should be precise without pixelation around curves. If the showroom examples have soft or unclear edges, finished work ordered from this supplier is unlikely to be better.

3. Range of Cultural Examples

If your commission will involve non-English text or cultural motifs — a koru, a Pacific pattern, a Chinese character inscription — look specifically for evidence of this in the showroom. A supplier with genuine experience producing headstones for Auckland's multicultural community will have examples of this work on display, not just standard English-language memorials.

4. Design Coherence in Finished Examples

Look at completed memorials as a whole, not just their individual elements. Does the shape, stone colour, lettering style, and any decorative element feel like they belong together? Or do the examples look like a collection of features bolted onto a standard format? Coherent design is a sign of a supplier who thinks carefully about the full composition, not just the parts.

5. How Staff Handle Your Questions

The showroom visit is also an opportunity to assess the people you will be working with. Do they answer questions directly and knowledgeably? Do they ask about the cemetery requirements before jumping into design options? Do they treat the purpose of the visit with appropriate seriousness? The quality of that first conversation often reflects the quality of the relationship you will have through the entire process.
