DIY or Professional Turf Install: An Honest Assessment of Both

Synthetic lawn looks like an achievable DIY project. It is a roll of material laid on prepared ground, which sounds like a long weekend and a trailer hire. Plenty of people do complete it themselves successfully. Plenty of others end up paying an installer to redo it. The difference is almost entirely down to which parts of the job they understood before starting.

What the job actually involves

Excavation to 100–150mm and removal of the spoil. On a 50 square metre area that is around 7 cubic metres of material to dig out and cart away — several trailer loads, or a skip. Then aggregate in, spread, levelled and compacted in layers with a hired plate compactor, with falls set towards a drainage outlet. Then a fine bedding layer screeded flat. Then the turf laid, left to relax, cut, seamed, edged and infilled.

The physical component is substantial. Turf rolls are heavy — a 4-metre-wide roll is a genuine two or three person lift — and they are awkward to move through a side gate without dragging or creasing them.

Where DIY jobs go wrong

Under-excavating. Laying over existing topsoil is the single most common shortcut, and it guarantees settlement within a year or two as the organic material breaks down.

Compacting in one lift. A plate compactor works through a limited depth. Dumping 150mm of aggregate and compacting the top of it leaves a loose base that consolidates unevenly under use.

Ignoring pile direction. All pieces must run the same way. Two adjacent pieces laid in opposite directions read as two different colours in raking light, and no amount of brushing fixes it.

Rushing the seams. Turf needs time to relax and reach ambient temperature before cutting. Cut it cold and tight and it will expand and buckle at the seam on the first hot day.

Skimping on infill. Infill weights the surface and holds fibres upright. Under-infilled turf ripples and flattens.

Where DIY makes good sense

Small, flat, simple areas with easy access and no drainage complications — a 15 square metre courtyard, a dog run, a strip beside a driveway. Also anything laid on an existing hard surface, like a balcony or a concrete patio, where the base work is already done and the job is genuinely just cutting and fixing.

Where it does not

Slopes, poor drainage, large areas, complex shapes, anything with a fall-height safety requirement, and anything you intend to last fifteen years. Also worth noting: most manufacturers' warranties on artificial grass nz products cover the material, not the installation. If the surface fails because the base moved, that is not a warranty claim.

A reasonable middle path is to do the demolition and excavation yourself and bring in a professional for base construction and laying. The heavy unskilled work is where you save money; the skilled work is where you lose it.
